Vernon is a leading national and international performer and pedagogue
His performing career, including with the Canberra Wind Soloists has taken him on musical journeys to London, Japan, Russia, China, Korea, New Zealand, Hungary, Yugoslavia, the Jerash Festival in Jordan, the Israel Philharmonic Society in Tel Aviv, and with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Greece.
Vernon was Head of Flute at the Australian National University School of Music for over 17 years, and prior to this, was Principal Flute, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
He represented Australia in the World Symphony Orchestra in the USA and has given performances as guest Principal Flute in the London Symphony, the BBC and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, as well as in the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Australia and Europe.
Musical collaborations have included concerts with many respected conductors and musicians, amongst them, Olivier Messaien, Leopold Stokowski, Andre Previn, Alfred Brendel, Barry Tuckwell and Vladimir Ashkenazy, and more recently with his son, pianist, Daniel DeBorah. Vernon’s discography is numerous having recorded with ABC, EMI, Move and other labels.
He is the author of “The Flute Players Book with Demonstration CD”. Its popularity has led to its current “third edition”, and it continues to be sold throughout the world.
As a sought after teacher and mentor, Vernon’s former students hold positions in orchestras and ensembles around the world.
In recent years, he has shared many of his old historical live performances on YouTube and there are now well in excess of one hundred Vernon Hill Historical Flute performances available.
