Bonita is a Sydney-based musician and is a recent full-time member of the Opera Australia Orchestra, based at the Sydney Opera House.
Growing up in Melbourne, Bonita completed her undergraduate studies at University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts under the tutelage of Sylvia Hosking (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). Through her involvement with the Australian Youth Orchestra, she participated in tutorials and lessons with several celebrated double bassists such as Max McBride, Tim Dunin, Kees Boersma, Kirsty McCahon, and Alex Henery.
In 2012 she relocated to the United States to undertake her Master of Music degree at Boston University, College of Fine Arts. There she was fortunate to study with Boston Symphony Orchestra bassists Todd Seeber and Principal Ed Barker. She also participated in master classes and lessons with other renowned bassists such as Hal Robinson (The Philadelphia Orchestra), Ben Levy (Boston Symphony Orchestra), and Donald Palma (Orpheus Chamber
Whilst in the USA Bonita enjoyed working with several orchestras and ensembles such as the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, and played as Principal Double Bass of the Cantata Singers Orchestra and Emmanuel Music, both prestigious early music ensembles. Travelling outside of Boston, she also worked with other prominent orchestras such as the Hawaii Symphony and New Haven Symphony.
In Australia, Bonita performed regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria, as well as with other Australian orchestras such as the Adelaide Symphony and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, before joining the Opera Australia Orchestra in 2016.
Since moving to Sydney she continues to perform with various ensembles such as Pinchgut; Orchestra of the Antipodes, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Auckland Phiharmonia Orchestra, and regularly performs in film score recording sessions. Bonita loves teaching the double bass to students of all ages and levels, and has been involved in educational organisations such as State Music Camp, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, and Sydney Youth Orchestra programs.
